Paedophile Priest Anthony William Peter Caruana convicted for Chevalier College Abuse
It was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald, 19 August 2021 edition, in an article by Georgina Mitchell, that paedophile Priest Anthony William Peter Caruana, has been convicted of 22 counts of indecent assault and four counts of sexual intercourse with a pupil of the school.
Twelve prior students claimed they were abused by the Priest while attending Chevalier College at Burradoo, near Bowral, between 1982 and 1988; and after all these years he has been brought to justice for his deplorable crimes against children. During this time Caruana was a dormitory manager, ruby coach and band teacher at the NSW Southern Highlands School.
It was also related that during the course of events boys reporting to their parents as to the abuse, were not believed, and how the compounding effect of seeming abandonment brought further trauma that lasted with them for the rest of their lives.
Sadly this is a recurring story that we see in our matters of Institutional Child Sexual Abuse over and over again. Adults in power so often took the side of those with the prestige of being members of the clergy purely on the basis of who they were and what they purported to represent.
We hope that this successful prosecution of yet another crime against the truly innocent will demonstrate that these victims were truthful in their cries for help that never came. They are vindicated by the convictions, and know that they are leading the way for the as yet unheard.
