Father Brian Davis – Abuse Under the Dominican Friars

Father Brian Davis, a member of the Dominican Friars, was a figure of religious and educational prominence, having served in various capacities, including teaching at Dominican Friars schools and as a parish priest. Despite his standing, Father Davis’ legacy is marred by grave allegations of child sexual abuse.

Throughout his career, Father Davis served and taught at several institutions:

  • Dominican Friars School in South Australia during the mid-1950s.
  • As Dean of Mannix College in Victoria in the early to mid-1970s.
  • St Dominic’s Priory in Melbourne.
  • As a Parish Priest in Newcastle.
  • At Blackfriars in Canberra between 1975 and 1978.
  • As the Priest in charge and Parish Priest of two parishes in Canberra.
  • As the Chaplain to the Australian National University from approximately 1983 to 1986.

In 2007, Father Davis faced 17 charges related to the institutional child sexual abuse of seven boys during his tenure at Dominican Friars schools in the late 1970s. These allegations came to light through the diligent efforts of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse, which also uncovered that the Dominican Friars had prior knowledge of misconduct allegations as early as 1960. Unfortunately, Father Davis passed away before he could be tried for these charges.
