New Charges of Abuse at Ashley Youth Detention Centre

The Ashley Youth Detention Centre in Tasmania has again become the focal point of public scrutiny as fresh charges have been laid against a former staff member. In May 2025, a 64-year-old former employee was charged with 11 counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault, and two counts of indecency. These charges stem from alleged incidents between 1974 and 1982 and during his tenure at the centre from 1990 to 2021.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court on June 11, 2025, in connection with these serious charges. This development follows a series of alarming revelations uncovered by the Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government’s Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings, which concluded in 2023. The inquiry exposed a systemic pattern of abuse and neglect at the Ashley Youth Detention Centre, leading to the Tasmanian Government’s announcement to close the facility by 2027.

Previous Actions and Legal Recourse

In November 2024, the Supreme Court of Tasmania approved a landmark $75 million settlement for 129 former detainees who alleged abuse at the centre between 1960 and 2023. This class action marked the first of its kind in Tasmania and included financial counselling and trauma support for survivors.

Additionally, as of mid-2024, 17 staff members were suspended as part of ongoing investigations into abuse allegations at the centre, with some cases still under active review. These measures reflect a broader effort by the Tasmanian Government and law enforcement to address decades of alleged abuse and to hold those responsible accountable.
