Child Abuse at St Pius X College, Chatswood
St Pius X College in Chatswood, a prominent Sydney educational institution, has been linked to serious allegations of historical institutional child abuse involving two specific individuals: Brother Christopher Rafferty and Father Roger Michael Bellemore. These cases highlight the urgent need for justice and support for survivors of institutional abuse.
Brother Christopher Rafferty
Brother Christopher Rafferty, a member of the Christian Brothers, was charged with child-sex offences allegedly committed in the 1980s while teaching at St Patrick’s College in Goulburn, New South Wales. Although these offences were not directly connected to his time at St Pius X College, where he was employed until his arrest in 2015, the charges have raised concerns about safeguarding within educational institutions.
The charges against Brother Rafferty included indecent assault and acts of indecency. Despite the gravity of these accusations, he was acquitted in a judge-alone trial in 2016 due to insufficient evidence to secure a criminal conviction.
Father Roger Michael Bellemore
Father Roger Michael Bellemore served as chaplain at St Pius X College from 1997 to 2003. Though there were no misconduct allegations during his time at the college, his past later caught up with him. In 2008, Father Bellemore was convicted of sexual abuse offences committed during the 1960s and 1970s in Tasmania.
At Marist College in Burnie, where he was a teacher and priest, Father Bellemore was found guilty of maintaining a sexual relationship with a person under 17. His conviction resulted in a four-year prison sentence with a non-parole period of two years.
