Call for Witnesses: Yeoval Public School (NSW), 1983

Koffels Solicitors & Barristers is assisting a Survivor of childhood sexual abuse who attended Yeoval Public School (NSW) in 1983 (now known as Yeoval Central School).

The Survivor has disclosed that they were sexually abused by a male teacher, Mr Chant, while a student at the school. The abuse is alleged to have occurred during class time.

We are seeking to speak confidentially with any former students, staff members, or community members who may have information relevant to this matter.

Summary of the Allegations

The Survivor reports that the abuse took place inside the classroom, in circumstances where the teacher engaged in highly inappropriate conduct toward the child.

While we do not publish explicit or graphic details, the behaviour described represents a serious abuse of authority and trust, and conduct that was unlawful at the time.

Why Witness Information Matters

Many Survivors of childhood sexual abuse did not speak up at the time due to fear, confusion, or the power imbalance between students and teachers. As a result, formal complaints were often not made, even where concerning behaviour was noticed by others.

Witness information can be crucial in historical abuse matters, including:

  • observations of inappropriate behaviour by a teacher,
  • recollections of students being singled out or isolated,
  • shared experiences between former classmates, or
  • concerns raised informally at the time.

You do not need to have witnessed abuse directly for your information to be relevant.

Who We Are Hoping to Hear From

We encourage contact from anyone who:

  • attended Yeoval Public School around 1983,
  • recalls Mr Chant as a teacher,
  • noticed behaviour that seemed inappropriate or concerning, or
  • has information that may support a Survivor’s account.

Even if you are unsure whether what you remember is important, you are welcome to get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions

I attended Yeoval Public School in the early 1980s — should I contact you even if I’m unsure?

Yes. If you attended Yeoval Public School (NSW) around 1983 and recall anything concerning about a teacher’s behaviour, it may be helpful to speak with us, even if your memories are incomplete. You can call +612 9283 5599 or use the free and confidential call-back form on this page.

What if I remember unusual behaviour in the classroom but not specific incidents?

Many people remember behaviour that felt uncomfortable or inappropriate at the time without understanding it fully. Information about classroom interactions, routines, or who was singled out can still be relevant.

I was in the class but don’t remember anything — can I still help?

Yes. Details about class structure, supervision, seating arrangements, or how students were managed can help establish context in historical matters, even if you do not recall specific events.

Do I have to make a formal statement or be identified?

No. An initial conversation is confidential, informal, and obligation-free. You decide whether you want to provide any further information or take any additional steps.

What if discussing this brings back memories of my own schooling?

That is not uncommon. If speaking with us raises concerns about your own experiences, we can listen and explain available options at your pace.

Does it matter that this happened more than 40 years ago?

No. Historical child sexual abuse matters can still be pursued many decades later. Witness information may remain important regardless of how much time has passed.
