Abuse at Kelso Primary by Former Teacher Mark Betts
In March 2025, former primary school teacher Mark Betts was charged with 20 historical child sexual abuse offences, including sexual intercourse with a person under the age of 10 and multiple counts of sexual or indecent assault against persons under 16 years old while under his authority. These alleged offences occurred between 1988 and 1990 during his tenure at a school in Kelso, near Bathurst, and reportedly occurred during classes, sporting trips, and sleepovers at children’s homes.
Betts, now 68, was arrested at Sydney International Airport on March 29, 2025, following a police investigation initiated in May 2023. He appeared in Parramatta Local Court on March 30 and was granted conditional bail. His case will be heard in Gosford Local Court on May 26, 2025.
Civil Compensation for Survivors
Survivors of child sexual abuse have the right to seek civil compensation for the harm they have suffered. Civil claims can provide financial compensation for pain and suffering, medical expenses, loss of earnings, and other damages resulting from the abuse. Importantly, pursuing a civil claim is separate from any criminal proceedings and focuses on the impact the abuse has had on the survivor’s life.
In New South Wales, there is no limitation period for bringing a civil claim related to child sexual abuse, meaning survivors can come forward regardless of when the abuse occurred. This legal framework acknowledges the profound and lasting effects of such trauma and aims to provide avenues for redress and justice.
